The idea of starting a small internet business can be very exciting. However, before you get carried away with dreams of success and stacks of money, you need to step back and make sure you are going about the whole process the right way.

The last thing you want is to pour your heart and soul into a new business to only watch it wither away and die from lack of visitors to your site.

To make sure that doesn’t happen, you’ll want to follow these 3 steps when starting a small internet business.

3 Steps to Starting a Small Internet Business

If you want to have a successful online business, then you need to go about it the right way. These 3 steps will get you moving down the right path.

Step 1. Make Sure There Is a Demand for What You’re Offering –

This may be the most important step of all. Let’s assume you have a great idea for a business. You’ve been thinking about it for months or maybe even years.

It’s an idea you’re passionate about as well as an idea you know a lot about, so you decide to start a business based around this idea.

This is how most small businesses start. The problem is, you haven’t taken the time to find out if there is any demand for your business idea. You have a product or service but you haven’t performed any market research to determine how many people out there want or need what you have to offer.

The truth of the matter is, while you may your idea is the greatest thing since sliced bread, it doesn’t mean anyone else will.

So, make darn sure there is a market for your product or service before you go to all the trouble of starting a small internet business.

You’ll be glad you went to the trouble, and it will pay off in the end.

You can do this research by checking out your competitors and see what they are offering, keyword research, and simply ask people online what their problems are and the solutions they are looking for.

Step 2. Take care of all the legal stuff –

There’s no doubt about it, but this step is the most boring. I know you’re rather be working on your website or designing business cards or even writing content, but this must be done.

This will include things such as:

  • Deciding the structure of your business – Sole proprietorship, corporation, or limited liability company (LLC)
  • Determining where you will form your company – either your own state or a state that is friendly to business such as Delaware.
  • Select your business name
  • Apply for a business license
  • Register your DBA (fictitious business name) if you are using a business name other than your own name
  • Contact your state to determine your tax collection obligations

TopBizTips Pro Tip: If you plan on forming an LLC or corporation do get professional help. There’s quite a bit of paperwork involved and this is something you need to get right the first time.

Step 3. Getting Your Website Up and Running

Now comes the fun part, designing your website, but before you can, you need to actually have a website and that takes a:

  • Domain name
  • Web hosting

When it comes to selecting a domain name, don’t spend too much time of this. People who are starting a small internet business tend to worry too much about their website name.

Sure, you want it to make sense and be something that is easy to remember, but the name isn’t as important as you might think. You will also find that while you have come up with a great domain name it isn’t available. That’s true for many good names. Either someone else is using it or they own it and want to sell it to you for thousands of dollars.

When you’re trying to decide on your domain name do take the following into consideration:

  • Always go with a dot.com
  • If possible make your name ten characters or less – just like TopBizTips.com
  • Don’t pay for an expensive domain name
  • Try not to use hyphens, but if you do, keep it to one

TopBizTip Pro Tip: You don’t need your main site keyword in your domain name. In fact, Google doesn’t really like it when you do.

When it comes to hosting, you have lots of choices, but Blue Host is one of the best. You can get started for as little as $3.95 a month. In addition, if you are planning on having a WordPress website or blog, you can get it set up with one click.

Not to mention, if you purchase a year’s hosting upfront, you Blue Host will throw your website’s domain in for free. Signing up with Blue Host is truly one of the best things you can do for yourself and your business due to its low cost and ease of use.

These three steps will help you set up the foundation of your business. From there, it just takes a lot of hard work, and a little luck to take this foundation and turn it into something special.
